RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
